A Texas style dog is a comfort food that could fit nearly any occasion. It takes a classic American dish and elevates it with an unimaginable flavor. Also known as the Coney Dog, from Coney Island, New York, this classic dish made one of its first appearances in a Greek restaurant. The best part is how it is easy to make and how it will leave your guests wanting more and more every time.
While there are many ways to create this dish and to perfect it to your own liking, here is a recipe that’ll get you started!
To create this dish, you will need the following ingredients.
- 8 Franks
- 8 Hot Dog Buns
- Yellow mustard
- 1 cup chopped yellow onion
- 2 cups grated Cheddar cheese
- 1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and thinly sliced
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- ½ sweet yellow onion, chopped
- ½ red bell pepper, chopped
- 1 (8 ounce) can of tomato sauce
- 1 tablespoon chili powder
- 2 teaspoons garlic granules
- 2 teaspoons paprika
- Salt and pepper to taste
To start off, first make the chili by browning the ground beef in 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large saucepan for about 10 minutes over medium heat.
Then add your onions, red peppers, tomatoes, and other seasonings. Stir well and allow the mixture to bubble for about 10 minutes. Then reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 30 minutes.
Once this is done, fire up your hotdogs and buns on the grill for a nice sear. All that’s left is assembling the hot dog. Top your hotdog with some mustard, a heaping spoonful of chili, cheese, onions, and a jalapeno or two if you want a kick to it.
