Holiday Happenings: Plans to Make the Season Merry and Bright

The holiday season is upon us and while that means preparing dinners, wrapping presents, and general merriment, it also means spending time and making memories with the family. While we can’t do all of the things that we would like to due to COVID-19 restrictions, there are still plenty of activities that will bring joy to the whole family this year.

Family Holiday Activities

Many of us who celebrate Christmas invested in artificial trees years ago, hoping to save our vacuums from the constant piles of pine needles, but after the year that we’ve all had, we need something to lift our spirits. So instead, end the year with a little something extra by bundling up the family (while making sure to bring your masks) and getting a live tree from a local tree farm. Not only will you be supporting a local business, but you’ll be creating a family memory that will last for years. And when decorating, be sure to hide the pickle in your tree; there’s a Pennsylvania tradition of hiding a pickle decoration in the Christmas tree and whoever finds it the fastest gets to open the first present on Christmas morning.

Season’s Sweets

One of the best parts about the holidays is all of the sweets – from candy canes and peppermints to pies and cakes. And while enjoying them is delicious, it’s making them that is the best part! One of the best holiday snacks that the family can have fun making together is a gingerbread house! Whether you’re making it from scratch or picking up a gingerbread house kit from retailers like Target, we’re sure you’ll have a sweet time. It also won’t hurt to make some classic holiday cookies; some of our personal favorites are chocolate chip cookies, snickerdoodles, and sugar cookies.

Once your bellies are full and the tree is covered in your favorite ornaments from top to bottom, hop in the car and head to Nay Aug Park in Scranton for the annual light show. From now until January 7th from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., you and your family can take a slow drive through the park, listening to classic Christmas songs as you take in the beautiful light spectacle.
